Grupa
Helps companies with the onboarding process.
About this project.
As a UX designer, I found a great opportunity to create an app that would ease the discomfort of starting a new job.
I hope it helps managers better handle onboarding.
This project is a part of a Bootcamp task and it was done in less than 10 days.
I. Research.
88% of the employees think their employer did a poor job with the onboarding process.
According to current statistics, one in five employment relationships fails during the probation period - which results in need to hire new people (Gallup, 2017).
Managersās perspective.
We did 5 interviews with managers in tech companies. The insights: they are often busy to balance between the work that has to be done and organising social activities for the new hires. Quite often they would assign a buddy to the new person, so they can address their questions to them.
Newcomerās perspective.
I did 6 interviews with employees that were currently hired in tech companies (in the last 6 months). The insights: 5 of them answered that they didnāt remember a proper onboarding process in their current company. They would tell best practices from previous experience - including a guide book, buddy, lunch with their teammates, or some small social activities - like being introduced to everyone in the company, having to guess some facts about their teammates.
the insights from 11 interviews:

The new employees need more than 1 onboarding method.
The time is takes them to integrate varies from a week to half a year.
Training by a leader is a common onboarding method in all of them.
The policies and culture of the company are the first things the new hire needs to learn.
I came to those insights after I put all answers in categories. This is a method, called āAffinity Mappingā.

DEFINING THE USERS š§š¼āš¼š©š»āš¼
It was clear from the research that we need 2 personas - for the manager and the newly hired side.
I referred to them throughout the entire process.
āWe want to show same transparency from companyās values to communication with our employeesā
Ben Retuk, Product Manager on team āBlockchainā
āWhen somebody told you their name and then you donāt remember it, it can a nightmare.ā
Mile Tang, newly hired web developer
Who is our client?
š©š»āš»
SaaS providers generally price applications using a subscription fee, most commonly a monthly fee or an annual fee. The business goal for our onboarding app is to be purchased by tech companies that want to increase their teams.
Client Example
Phine: a Tech Company
I needed to create a fictional company where I will place my personas. With it in mind, I could think how an onboarding app would be a benefit for the whole organization.
II. Interface.
Let's do an onboarding app.
I sketched the basic dashboard interface
Spread the necessary information from the research into wireframes.
Tested the initial paper flow with 1 user.
MISTAKES AND IMPROVEMENTS.
This step was all about testing and changing. .
Out of 3 user tests, I found 11 issues.
Styles decisions.
During the interviews, we asked both managers and new hires what values do they appreciate in their work environment. There were 3 main values that were common between both sides: growth, exposure, openness.
Font: Saira
During the research, I reached out to tech companies and this is the client that I chose to focus on, so we used a tech font like Saira.
Colors
I chose a gradient color to express the progress of a newcomer to an integrated employee.

Overview.
This project was part of IronHack's Bootcamp. The whole process and all interviews were done remotely and I used methods I had not used before - like contextual inquiry - asking the interviewees to share with me their screens. I had many challenges: from understanding the problem, to changing general content after tests proved me wrong.
